How matching works
A plain query runs a relevance ladder; nothing is an error.
- Exact mark and phrase matches first, then fuzzy words and prefixes — a misspelling still finds the mark.
- Sounds-alike matching (double metaphone) — KWIK finds QUICK, the comparison an examiner actually makes under §2(d).
- Similar-meaning matching over mark embeddings — near-synonyms rank beside fuzzy tokens, never above exact hits.
- Owner matching — companies resolved into entities, so a portfolio is one answer rather than a list of name strings.
- Operators when you want exact control: wildcards, OR, NOT and proximity turn the ladder off and search the wording alone.
- A knockout verdict on the trademarks tab answers the first question — can I use this name? — before you read a single result.
What you can search by
- Mark text, owner or applicant name, serial or registration number, assignment reel and frame, TTAB proceeding number.
- Goods and services wording and international class — a 'search by what you sell' door for founders.
- A logo image: perceptual hashing finds look-alike design marks even when the wording differs.
- Design search codes, pseudo-mark statements, filing and registration dates, live or dead status.
Every record is a page
- Applications and registrations. Facts table, the plain-English meaning of the status, the maintenance clock, the prosecution timeline, similar marks and the owner's family.
- TTAB proceedings and decisions. Parties, marks at issue, status and timeline; full Board decisions with the precedential ones flagged and the issues classified.
- Assignments and owners. Who bought and sold marks, and an owner profile for every company on the register.
Free, and then more
Searching is free with no account. Tracking any mark, deadline reminders and the calendar feed are free with a free account. Comprehensive clearance adds state registers and common-law sources plus a written opinion from an independent attorney, at a posted flat fee.

Questions
Is this a replacement for the USPTO's own search?
It searches the same public record, refreshed daily from the USPTO's bulk-data feeds, and adds relevance ranking, phonetic and semantic matching, owner resolution and a knockout verdict. For a filing you should still confirm the current status of any record on the USPTO's TSDR.
How current is the index?
New applications, status changes, assignments and TTAB filings typically appear within a day of the USPTO publishing them; the coverage statement on this page shows the exact date each collection is current through.
Does it search state and common-law marks?
The free engine covers the federal register, the TTAB and the Copyright Office. The common-law register and state registers are separate collections, and a comprehensive clearance search adds them with an attorney's written opinion.
